Business Travelers Choosing Vacation Rentals At “Eye-Popping” Speeds?

Screen Shot 2014-05-12 at 10.50.07 AMAccording to a report from Concur, which operates a travel and expense system with more than 22 million users globally, vacation rentals are showing up on business expense accounts at “eye-popping” speeds…

Business travelers used to stay exclusively at chain hotels like Marriott and Hyatt.

But lately, as expected, we are popping up on business expense reports more and more.

Concur says that business stays at AirBnB, for instance, have gone from $0 (two years ago) to $1 million this quarter alone!

Since this represents only a tiny sliver (1%) of the market share, the report reveals “hotels could soon be pressured by the loss of the business and luxury segment.”

(No big shock here.)

If you want to experiment with the business traveler segment, there are some really simple (and in most cases, free) adjustments you can make to your business in order to test the waters:

  1. Thanks Matt, exactly what I need to do. Our vacation rental is challenging during the summer, as being in Phoenix and having a minimum of 30 day rental, corporate rentals are what we want. Actually for one of our condos, we just got a 3 month corporate rental, yess!

  2. Hi Matt! Attracting potential business customers is not something I would have thought to do. However, I’ve had two separate companies approach me about renting my beach home for a few days for their meetings at the coast. This is a 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom home. The companies wanted large windows to offer lots of light, a large dining room table to work with their laptops, high speed reliable internet and a living room that they could all gather in. In helped to have a fabulous view and a hot tub. Both of these companies found us on Airbnb. Unfortunately, the companies did not review us, so I need to place a phone call to ask how well the house worked for them. I feel like this is a great mid-week, off-season market, and I would love to know more about how to align with more businesses. Also, these two companies chose to meet outside of the city where their businesses are located – meeting at the beach an hour or two away.

  3. I travel approx 1 week a month for work and stayed at a VR for the first time (for work) a few weeks ago in Anacostia, in D.C. Here are a couple of my tips to attract the individual business traveller:

    1) Highlight the separate living and sleeping rooms. I get tired of staying in a hotel and having my bed next to my desk next to my couch next to my coffee next to my luggage, next to my bathroom… Etc.

    2) Offer individual bags of ground coffee. Costco sells them, if you are near one, or contact a local roaster and ask if they sell 3.5 to 3.75 oz. bags of coffee for the style of coffee maker you have. Throw in a couple of little creams and sugar. BAM!

    3) Free, designated parking. OMG! I parked, for free, less than 20 steps from my front door. Awesome. Convenient. If you have a garage, even better. Mention that they can leave their laptop and presentation materials in their car since it will be parked in a secure, enclosed facility.

    4) High speed internet, wireless. Let me rephrase that. VERY high speed internet, wireless. If they’re a road-warrior they want to be connected instantly, and in the morning and evening, be able to skype with the family.

    5) Offer to roll-up the cleaning fee into the daily rate (assists with expense reports) and finally, email a professional receipt with a zero balance due amount (requirement with many reimbursement officers). MS Word has a bunch of templates for receipts.

    So that is my two cents!
