Pack for a Purpose

What if every single one of your guests brought with them something that contributed to solving your community's biggest problems?

School supplies, musical instruments, extra soccer cleats, soap...etc.

As vacation rental hosts we are sitting on a gold-mine of goodwill with our direct access to travelers who want to help.

Enter Pack for a Purpose, a "listing site" of sorts that instructs guests on how to use a small amount of space in their luggage to pack supplies needed by community projects around the world.

Getting listed is free and because our industry is so new, you will most likely be the first/only vacation rental "do gooder" property in your area.

If every VRMB member does their part and signs up, we can make a significant dent on our world's greatest challenges **Please email me your registration so I can keep track**

Lastly, it's worth mentioning that the most prized vacationers cherish and seek a sense of purpose when traveling, so you're increasing the value of your vacation rental marketing too 🙂

Who's with me!?

  1. I have the same situation as Jenny. My VR are all in Italy, but packwithapurpose does not show any projects in Italy. Of course, there are projects which could be part of this initiative, but I unfortunately don’t have the time to organise this. However, lovely initiative.

    1. I would recommend reaching out to them and asking. It will take you 2 minutes and could make a massive change in your community. If that risk is worthwhile to you of course.

  2. While this is a great idea it is for countries other than the U.S.

I live and work here and would like to focus my efforts on contributing
to my community and would like to help influence others to do the
same…make Gold Beach, Oregon and Curry County a better place to live
for all. We have issues with homeless here and a big transient population and a lot of families who rely on the (very small) food bank, soup kitchen, clothing bank, etc. many folks struggling just to meet their basic needs.

Up on top of the surrounding hills here are scores of beautiful vacation rental estates….some are literally mansions, that sit empty much of the time. There is a real division between the “haves” and the “have nots.” and plenty of local opportunities to pitch in.

    1. Are there any ways in which your personal strengths or passions could help solve the homeless problem?

      1. I am working to help create more food stability here…”real” food, not just processed junk. Everywhere I go GreenSpiralHand (counterpartart to RedSpiralHand) gets involved to help with community gardens, contributing organic food to foodbanks, soup kitchens and senior centers and also helping low income families to eat healthier on small budgets. Currently working with the (very small) local community garden and have a vision to spearhead a community food forest project as well giving away plant starts and patio garden containers.

I also help teach people to collect and craft their own wild medicinal tinctures, teas and salves.

It’s my passion. Well, besides being a great vacation rental web development person…

  3. If I understand this correctly, we need to organize a community outreach initiative that we then will promote as a “Pack with a Purpose” initiative on our website – and theirs. Once we organize it, it will be listed on their website. This is a great idea, but it’s not turnkey so it’s a longer term project. Perhaps I’ll check with my local support staff to see if they know of a cause that we could support.

  4. We are grateful for the outreach that you have initiated, Matt! To answer several questions in the comments, we are constantly adding new countries around the world. Just because a country is not on our website yet, does not mean we would not welcome Participants that fulfill the requirements found at this link: (https://www.packforapurpose.org/participate/as-an-accommodation/).

It is critical that the instructions be carefully followed. I am thrilled to add more places in the USA, as there is need everywhere and one always has the opportunity as a traveler to be gracious. This blog explains how easy it is for a traveler to take the perfect hostess gift
for the community they are traveling to by choosing to Pack for a Purpose.(https://www.packforapurpose.org/blog/2016/11/perfect-hostess-gift/) In the seven years since I founded Pack for a Purpose, we have continued to improve the submission process for our stakeholders and learned which practices optimize the results. We take our commitments
very seriously and expect all of the Participants in our initiative to do so as well. If you are not already supporting a community project, it will take time to find a worthwhile project and establish a partnership. However, I truly believe this will not only enhance your business, but enhance the experience of your guests. Sincerely, Rebecca Rothney, Founder of Pack for a Purpose

  5. This is just so very awesome! Just got and email from a representative at PfaP and I am sure that even though our VR location is not in a project area we can still participate. This is a win, win, win! People who need some help get it, VR’s get a link to help with SEO with some good PR and guests get to feel good about giving and helping others.

My family and I have sponsored a child in Guatemala for a couple of years now and my (at the time 16 year old daughter) went there to help out on a mission trip. She came back with an education and experience that changed her life forever. It opened her eyes to a world outside our little city and gave her a passion for helping others.

I can’t tell you the joy I felt as a parent when she got back and told us about her trip, how it had made her feel blessed and really wanted to help the children she had met while she was there.
I hope that this will be a way to further educate my kids about the joy of giving.

The next time we go on a trip I will be looking for the PfaP logo on whatever accommodations we stay at and really hope as a group we can help?

  6. I just talked to Rebecca from Pack For A Purpose (very nice lady.) and she asked me to add her comment to the page…….

    Hi Matt,

Wanted to post this comment, but wasn’t able to, as I am not going to create a new account with Disqus or share my personal information with them. If you would like to post my comment, which I have copied below, that would be great.
